What does a divorce mediator actually do?

Not a judge. Not an attorney. A neutral person who helps you agree. Mediation is the fastest path from disagreement to an agreement the court will honor — without a judge deciding your life for you.

A neutral third party
A qualified mediator doesn't represent either of you. Their job is to help you communicate, identify what each of you actually needs, and build an agreement you both own.
Confidential, with exceptions
Utah law protects mediation communications, with important exceptions — including safety, threats, and legally required disclosures. Participants sign an Agreement to Mediate that explains the rules. That protection allows both parties to be honest without fear.
Binding when approved
A mediated agreement can become binding once both parties sign it and, where required, the court accepts or approves it. divvi generates the stipulation and decree, but cannot guarantee a court will accept any document.

Is mediation required in a Utah divorce?

In Utah, mediation isn’t optional.

Mandatory, not discretionary. Once an answer is filed in response to a divorce petition, all remaining contested issues are referred to mediation, and the parties must attend at least one session before the case proceeds. Costs are normally split equally, and the mediator must be court-qualified.

This is the one people are surprised by: if your spouse files an answer, Utah does not let you go straight to a judge. You and your spouse have to sit down with a court-qualified mediator for at least one session first, and you normally split the cost. You can ask to be excused for good cause — through the court, through the ADR Office's Motion to Excuse Mediation, or from a qualified mediator — and domestic violence is a recognized reason to ask. Because you have to do it anyway, doing it early is what keeps the bill down.
