The number of overnights each parent has drives both the custody label and the child support calculation. More balanced overnights can change which support worksheet applies and how much is owed.
Two things have to be true: the child stays with each parent overnight for more than 30% of the year — 111 nights is the working threshold — and both parents contribute to the child's expenses beyond child support (§ 81-9-101). Then Utah uses the joint-custody worksheet.
An overnight is a night the child sleeps in that parent's care. Counting them accurately across the year — including holidays and school breaks — is what determines your custody and support figures.
